We have been holding Open Houses for the drillers on state land and have gotten their cooperation as far as trying to conduct flaring during lunar periods rather than dark of the moon. They are also trying to position their job lights to be pointing away from the park rather than towards. Once the pipelines are in place, less flaring will occur overall. We have no influence on companies drilling on private property, just hope that they will comply as part of their environmental stewardship initiatives. Most of the flaring has not even been a problem to visual observing at the park...it is very evident when it is overcast and you can see it from quite a distance, but I would assure you that there are those out there who are trying to say that the overall quality of the darkness is diminished, but I beg to differ. I'm sure if you make the trip and the weather cooperates, it will be a beautiful sky.
Mon, 08 Aug 2011 10:27:09 -0500 http://www.csspdarkskyfund.org/blog/entry/65249/what-do-you-want-at-cssp#comment3322943 /blog/entry/65249/what-do-you-want-at-cssp#comment3322943 What do YOU want at CSSP? - Geoff Butland
My two visits to Cherry Springs from Connecticut have been fantastic. The facilities are top notch, the skies are wonderful. But if there is one thing I would like to see, it would be some sort of :"astronomer's forecast" for gas well flaring. I am debating the wisdom of making the 6+ hour drive this week - the weather looks good for Wednesday night, I have vacation time, and it's very nearly new moon. But the gas well flaring is a big question mark - do I risk burning $80 of gasoline only to find conditions worse than my own backyard?
Mon, 27 Jun 2011 12:04:22 -0500 http://www.csspdarkskyfund.org/blog/entry/65249/what-do-you-want-at-cssp#comment3267673 /blog/entry/65249/what-do-you-want-at-cssp#comment3267673 What do YOU want at CSSP? - Robert Kocwr
I would like to Thank The Dark Sky Fund Forn its great work. Thanks very much for all the effort. Some things I'd like to see:
* Be sure the water supply is reliable. If this means nice pit toilets at the back of the park, rather than the flush kind, that's ok.
* On the other hand, if water isn't really a problem, showers would be nice.
* Better internet. I'm not sure what the problem is. Once a bunch of people got to the star party, there wasn't enough bandwidth, but even before then I was being thrown off at regular intervals. One guy said it works better in the rain and I also observed that.
* More information about other adventures available in the area. I greatly enjoyed the presentation on geocaching and would have loved to try that during those rainy days. Next year ...

It's a great park and I really had to think hard to come up with improvements.
Wed, 15 Sep 2010 04:27:01 -0500 http://www.csspdarkskyfund.org/blog/entry/65249/what-do-you-want-at-cssp#comment2921821 /blog/entry/65249/what-do-you-want-at-cssp#comment2921821 Welcome! - Maxine Harrison
The 2010 work bee will be Saturday, May 15. I want to thank Cherry Springs Park Management and Staff for all the efforts to make the Work Bee held this clear sky New Moon weekend such a big success. It was very obvious that much planning had gone into making this happen including planning the projects, bringing the tools and purchasing materials for the projects. On top of that, there was plenty of great food, beverages and many desserts for those that had registered for the Work Bee. Some park staff even worked on their weekend day off, when they could have been home getting chores done. One thing I would like to see is more of the amateur astronomers that enjoy the park, consider helping out at next year's Work Bee, as a demonstration that we appreciate the hard work of park management and staff to make this such a great place for observing the disappearing night sky.

The announcement of progress on the wireless internet service system was good to hear and will be an important improvement at the park, especially for monitoring weather forecasts and satellite imagery. I understand that this is the first installation of its kind in any PA State Park!! Congratulations Cherry Springs for another First!
Tue, 28 Apr 2009 12:59:21 -0500 http://www.csspdarkskyfund.org/blog/entry/65249/what-do-you-want-at-cssp#comment38941 /blog/entry/65249/what-do-you-want-at-cssp#comment38941 Welcome! - Helene Nawrocki
Max:
Great web site- lots of potential.
Many thanks for the link to the Potter County Education Council.
